Numbers Day 2
Read Numbers 9:15-23, Numbers 10:33-36
Just imagine for a moment what it would be like to follow around a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. This was the Israelite’s lives! They never had to guess where they were going next, they also didn’t have the ability to look ahead. They simply had to trust the Lord and when He moved, they moved. When He stayed, they stayed. This is a beautiful image of what our lives should look like as Christians. God has a plan and purpose for every step that you take and yet, so often, we forget to ask for His guidance and His counsel. Occasionally we run to God when we feel lost or confused about the future. But most of the time, we plan and direct our own steps and our own plans.
Numbers 9:23
“At the Lord’s command they encamped, and at the Lord’s command they set out. They obeyed the Lord’s order, in accordance with his command through Moses.”
The Israelites got so many things wrong, but this is one beautiful example of something that they got right. There’s a challenge for us here, to be people that wait on the Lord and seek His will for every step we take. “God should I be playing this sport in this season?”, “Where do you want me to go to college?”, “Where should I get a job?”, etc.
The Israelites waited on the Lord and finally the moment they were waiting for came. After just under a year of being camped out at Mount Sinai where they originally arrived after being freed from the slavery in Egypt, the Lord led them away from Sinai and they began their journey towards the promise land. So often, we find ourselves in a season of waiting and trying to figure out what is next. While there is something so exciting (and equally scary) about starting a new chapter of life, the encouragement that Numbers 9 and 10 gives us is that as long as we are with God and following Him, we are right where we need to be.
Questions to consider.
Do you make a habit of praying about decisions and life choices you have to make? How can you implement this into your life? What decisions do you have coming up now that you need to pray about and ask for God’s guidance?
Are you typically a patient person or an impatient person? When you are getting impatient in the season of life you find yourself in (the grade you are in, the sport season, waiting on a decision for your future, waiting on a relationship), what can you do to remind yourself that God has a purpose for where you are at right now?
As you take time to pray today, I want to encourage you to listen for God’s voice. Grab a notebook and a pen or pencil and ask God to give you direction. Bring any questions or decisions about the direction of your life to Him and then just listen for a few minutes and write down what you believe God is telling you.
