Joshua Day 5
Read Joshua 6.
What does it look like when you surrender to God? Instead of trying to do it yourself, you rely on the Lord. His strength and His plan for your life and challenges? It looks like victory. Joshua 6 is the chapter in which the Israelites begin to take control of the Promised Land, a moment that has been a long time coming! The very first battle that the Israelites face is a clear test, will they trust the Lord even when it doesn’t make sense.
God gives Joshua a command in the beginning of the chapter that is probably unlike any other military advice you’ve heard. God simply tells them to march around the city walls for six days and on the seventh day, the Lord will collapse the walls and deliver the city into their hands.
Joshua 6:2-5
2 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. 3 March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. 4 Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets. 5 When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in.”
The Israelites trust God, obey Him and it leads to them capturing the city of Jericho. The Lord had already won the victory, the Israelites just had to trust God and walk in obedience to what He commanded them. There is a reminder for you and I in this story, that the Lord has already won the victory over sin, death and shame. Stop trying to fight the battle in your own strength and in your own way. Trust the Lord and obey Him and He will lead you in the victory that He has already claimed for you.
Questions to consider.
Have you ever felt like God has asked you to do something that doesn’t make sense, or maybe isn’t the way you would have done things? What is your typical response in moments like this? If you haven’t been there, how do you think you would have responded to God’s instructions if you were Joshua?
What does it look like when you try to fight the battles of shame and sin in your own strength? Rather than trusting the Lord and following His guidance?
Ask God to give you direction and continue leading you in victory, ask Him for is strength and a Holy Spirit boldness to obey Him even when it doesn’t make sense.
