Part 2 - Day 2
Read Exodus 19.
Let’s start off today by remembering where we’ve been. B in Genesis 12, God made a covenant with Abraham.
Genesis 12:2-3
“I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”
About 650 years has passed since God made this promise and it is still coming to fruition. Now in Exodus 19, we see God confirming this covenant again through Moses, centuries after the death of Abraham.
Exodus 19:4-6
“‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’”
If the Israelites will obey God and do what He says, they will be His treasured possession. He will make them a kingdom of spiritual leaders that usher the rest of the world into His presence, and He will make them a set apart nation to reflect His glory. All as long as they simply obey Him and keep their end of the covenant.
The Israelites agree and Moses consecrates them in preparation for His presence to come down on Mount Sinai. Consecrate is a term that means “to be dedicated to a specific purpose” or “to make holy/set apart from the corrupting influences of the world for a specific purpose”. By washing their clothes, they were purifying themselves to be in the presence of God and be set apart to represent His glory. Of course, we no longer rely on physical rituals, but on the Holy Spirit to consecrate us and set us apart for the specific purpose of joining in the advancement of God’s kingdom. Jesus’ perfect blood has cleansed you and the Holy Spirit has set you apart for every good work the Lord has prepared for you and you are God’s treasured possession in Christ.
Questions to consider.
How can the faithfulness of God, to keep His promise through the books of Genesis and Exodus so far encourage you today?
The Israelites washed their clothes to consecrate themselves and get the dead and dirty things off. As the Holy Spirit has worked in your life to consecrate you, what spiritually dead or dirty things has He helped you overcome? What areas do you still need the Spirit to help you become more like Christ?
Thank Jesus for His cleansing blood that makes you pure before God. Every sin, defilement and dead thing has been paid for. He has fully prepared you to live in the presence of God every single day.
