Deuteronomy Day 6

Read Deuteronomy 31:1-8.

As the book of Deuteronomy comes to an end, Moses is nearing the end of his life. He would pass away a few chapters later in Deuteronomy 34. One of the most impactful leaders in the history of Israel. Moses led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt, gave them the 10 commandments, and mediated between God and the Israelites for decades (pleading with God to spare their lives multiple times after they sinned). In Deuteronomy 31, Moses announces the person that is to lead the Israelites after him, Joshua.

Deuteronomy 31:6
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

These are some of Moses’ last words to the Israelites, be strong and courageous because God is with you! Moses wants to make sure that he is not the source of confidence for the Israelites, but that God is the source of confidence. That he is not the foundation or source of comfort, but God is. After following Moses for decades, this was surely a hard transition for the Israelite people, but Moses wants them to be encouraged that the same God is leading them through Joshua and they can have faith to be strong and courageous because of that.

This is a great point to consider your own faith in Christ and walk with Him. While most of us start our walk with Christ by following someone further along and learning from them, it’s important to evaluate and make sure that Christ alone is the foundation of our faith. To clarify, I think it’s always wise to learn from and grow from parents, pastors, leaders, and friends that are further along. But to echo Moses’ heart, to recognize that these people are still broken, imperfect people just striving to follow God. No matter what mistakes those people make or what happens to them, God will never leave you nor forsake you and you can be strong and courageous because of that truth!

Questions to consider.
Who do you look up to in your faith? Have you ever been at a place where your faith in God was too reliant in another person? How would you know if it was?

How can you make sure that although there are leaders and mentors in your life, Christ is the foundation of your faith?

Today, take time to pray for the leaders in your life and people that encourage you in your walk with Christ. Ask that Christ would strengthen them and pour into them so that they can continue to pour out.
