Deuteronomy Day 3
Read Deuteronomy 8:10-20.
After talking about the seemingly slow pace that God brings victory to the Israelites, Moses shares with the Israelites how to remain faithful to God and not forget Him. Similar to us, the Israelites had a habit of crying out to God when things weren’t going well, but then ignoring God when things were perfectly fine. This not only breaks God’s heart to be ignored by His people, but there are real consequences in our life to living as if God doesn’t exist.
Deuteronomy 8:10-11
10 When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you. 11 Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day.
Moses gives two simple ingredients to living a life that is dependent on God in every season. He tells the Israelites to praise God when He does good things and be careful to obey His commands. Two of the ways that we can make sure that we honor God in good times and bad times are praise and obedience. When good things happen, don’t forget to spend time and praise God. Praise doesn’t always look like a song or a dance, sometimes it’s a prayer or simple thank you to God. No matter the form, praise is giving God the glory for everything good that’s happened in your life and recognizing that He is the source of it all.
Obedience is submitting to God’s will for your life. Living the way that God would want you to live. Too often, our obedience is motivated by our desire to receive something from God. You may think, “If I’m good, God will help me, bless me, or bring good things into my life”. Because of this, when things are going well and we feel blessed because we have a boyfriend/girlfriend, we are gaining popularity, or making more money, we can quickly turn from obedience to disobedience. This is what the cycle looked like in the Israelites lives and Moses is encouraging them to abide by God’s laws when things are bad but also when things are good. Obedience isn’t a tool to receive something from God, it is a pathway to live into God’s best for your life. God’s laws and commands exist because He cares about you and wants you to experience the fullness of life through Christ.
Questions to consider.
Do you consistently take time to praise God for all the good things He’s done in your life? Take some time and write down all of the things you can praise God for so far this year.
Is it harder to be obedient when things are going good in your life? Why do you think that is? Write down what motivates you to obey God, do you think your motives are right?
If there are any areas of your life that need repentance, take time to do that this morning. Turn from your sin/disobedience and turn towards God. Thank Him for His grace and mercy, praise Him for His goodness through prayer.
