Fasting Devotion Day 17
READ
“Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”” Luke 10:17-20 NKJV
THINK
In these verses Jesus remind His disciples of a powerful spiritual reality. He was there in the beginning and witness the fall of the enemy. There is literally nothing in all of creation that is not subject to His power and influence. We are victorious through the love and power of Christ. Spiritually speaking, life is a battlefield. Most of the battles that we fight are not “of the flesh”, meaning they don’t have to do with things in the natural, but instead, they are spiritual battles.
As soldiers, God gives us armor and weapons and he gives us the power to use the artillery he has given us. In this passage in Luke, serpents are symbolic of Satan, and scorpions are symbolic of evil spirits/evil men. No matter what we face, we can be encouraged that through Christ, we have authority and dominion over negative influence we encounter.
What is an area of your life in which your trust of Christ’s authority could grow? What are some of the spiritual battles that you are facing?
What can you do to increase your real joy about the fact that your name is written in the annuals of heaven? Miracles and exciting but residence in eternity is the greatest miracle! Who can you share that with today?
PRAY
Today we pray in celebration for all the victories Christ has already won on our behalf and in faith for all those yet to come! We have reason to be excited and hopeful because of Christ.
