Step Up, Day 45: The Power of the Sling
READ Judges 7:2-8 (NKJV)
2 And the LORD said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for Me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel claim glory for itself against Me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’
3 Now therefore, proclaim in the hearing of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and afraid, let him turn and depart at once from Mount Gilead.’ ” And twenty-two thousand of the people returned, and ten thousand remained.
4 But the LORD said to Gideon, “The people are still too many; bring them down to the water, and I will test them for you there. Then it will be, that of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ the same shall go with you; and of whomever I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ the same shall not go.”
5 So he brought the people down to the water. And the LORD said to Gideon, “Everyone who laps from the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set apart by himself; likewise everyone who gets down on his knees to drink.”
6 And the number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people got down on their knees to drink water.
7 Then the LORD said to Gideon, “By the three hundred men who lapped I will save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, every man to his place.”
8 So the people took provisions and their trumpets in their hands. And he sent away all the rest of Israel, every man to his tent, and retained those three hundred men. Now the camp of Midian was below him in the valley.
Sometimes with God the way forwards is backwards. Before the days of political correctness if you were a little boy it was perfectly acceptable for you ask your mom and dad for a slingshot and spend your days shooting acorns any faces of the other kids in your neighborhood. Of course now if you even considered to get such a gift for your kids you would be immediately trapped in the court of parental opinion and would be found guilty! It would not be uncommon to see kids hit a Coke bottle from 30 paces, or put an acorn through the air fast enough that it would shatter a glass bottle like it was a bullet.
The power of the sling rests in the fact that the farther back you pull, the stronger and tighter the propulsion of the sling. Our lives are like that sometimes. We are a people that always wants more, and we never want to subtract anything. God often takes away so that we have room for more. He pulls us back so He can rocket us forward. In this part of Gideon’s story we would want God to add soldiers, not take them away but God knows that we can only see His miracles when we remove some things that are blocking our view of His awesome power.
Today lay down on your face before God in humility as you pray to Him. Ask God with a genuine heart what things need to be sent away so that He can work a miracle in your life. Many of us are carrying 30,000 troops into battle and if we win the war we feel like we accomplished something. God want us to fight with 300 so that when we win we will know that HE did something! Ask God to remove a few things so He can work a mighty work and ask for the courage to trust Him
