Step Up, Day 22: Fasting, Part 1

Read Matthew 6:16-18 (NKJV)

16  “Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.

17  But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,

18  so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

There is something inside of us that wants people to know when we are doing something good, especially if its for God. Today we have started a week of fasting as a church to help us step up in our walk with Jesus, and in our commitment to set down deep roots.  We are all going to be tempted to tell somebody today that we are fasting. If we’re fasting from food, when everyone is pulling out something to eat we will feel this irresistible urge to let people know why we are not doing the same. If we are fasting from social media or some other daily habit, the itch to let people know will come, and it will come strong! In the above passage Jesus warns all of us to not trade the blessing of God for the praise of man. Do not sell the wonderful things God wants to do in your life, for the approval of people that will think you are super spiritual because you’re fasting.

Make a commitment to yourself and God that at least for today you will not let everyone know exactly what you’re doing. There is a time where it is appropriate to share the good news of what Jesus is doing in your life, and that you are fasting in response to that, but for today allow it to remain between you and the Father. He will honor the fact that you are doing this for Him even if nobody else knows it.
